Burger Throw Down Sunday at The Abbey

FONTANA — The Abbey Resort will host the Geneva Lakes Burger Throw Down Sunday, April 7. The event, a repeat from last year, features burgers from 14 different area restaurants, including the 2012 People's Choice Winner, chef Stuart Morton. The Geneva Lakes Chapter of the American Culinary Federation hosts the event with burgers from Daddy Maxwell's Dinner, Lighthouse, the Baker House, Foley's Bar and Grill, Gordy's Boat House Restaurant and Sprecher's....subscribers>>

Village seeks frog removal

FONTANA — Members of the Community Development Authority in Fontana would like to remove the remains of a former miniature golf course.Jay Hicks, a member of the CDA, calls the large green frog on Highway 67 “an eye sore.”“I would like to, maybe with volunteer work or get somebody to lend us some money, get rid of the frog and landscape that area,” he said at the Aug. 8 meeting. “We would approach him and say, ‘We’ll take it down and landscape it.’ It would enhance his property.”
Three will seek one seat on board

Three candidates are vying for one seat on the Fontana Elementary School Board.The seat became available after incumbent David Stout decided not to seek re-election. Stout had served on the board for one term, which lasts three years.

A new ambulance for Fontana EMS

Fontana — The EMS department’s new ambulance offers some slick new features that will enable medics to give better care to patients.The new ambulance offers a new bench seating system, which will place medics on each side of a patient. In the old ambulance medics could only sit on one side of the patient. “A lot of times it takes two people to do an assessment especially when working on a trauma victim,” EMT Shane Westphal said.

Fontana — The Fontana Corner Market isn’t the only business to notice changes in the level of groundwater along Highway 67.Bob Hutchinson, owner of Fontana Outdoor Sports, also has noticed an increase in the amount of water around his business and neighboring home.Hutchinson’s home has been filled with water on a regular basis.
Pollitt will not seek re-election
Petersen running for village president

Fontana — Village President Ron Pollitt has decided not to seek re-election, and Trustee Arvid “Pete” Petersen is hoping to take his place.On Monday, Petersen took out nomination papers for the president’s position. He did so after speaking with Pollitt, who told him he would not be seeking re-election. “I think Pete, because of his experience, would make a great replacement and I support him,” Pollitt said.
Commercial launch fees jump 60 percent

Fontana — Businesses that launches boats from the village’s municipal pier now have to pay the same rate as village residents. On a 3-2 vote Monday, the Village Board agreed to increase commercial launch fees by 60 percent.Trustees Micki O’Connell and Arvid “Pete” Petersen and Village President Ron Pollitt voted in favor of the increase and trustees George Spadoni and Patrick Kenny voted against it. Trustees Diane Lewis and Bill Turner were not at the meeting.
Fontana resident returns from two tours in Iraq, one in Afghanistan

Fontana — Cpl. David Blizard has seen a lot in his young life.The 22-year-old recently finished a four-year commitment with the U.S. Marines. During that time, he served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. His first tour of Iraq was during its first democratic elections, and his second tour was during the troop surge in 2007.
Fontana board adopts budget
Tax rate decreases 78 cents

Fontana — The Village Board approved a $2.08 tax rate per $1,000 of assessed value during a budget meeting Monday night.This is a 78 cent decrease from last year’s tax rate. This is attributed to the village’s recent reassessment, in which the average village property value increased by more than 40 percent.This means a home assessed at $275,000 would pay $572 to the village’s portion of the tax bill.
