Modernizing downtown traffic lights

Street signals down for hi-tech refit

BETTER STOP HERE because the traffic signals aren’t working and probably won’t be operating again for another week. Once the signals are operational, they will allow for smoother flow of traffic. The real test, though, won’t happen until next summer.

Drivers better heed the stop signs at the corners of Main and Center and Main and Broad streets this week.

It's the only signal they'll get.

The three-light traffic signals are down while new signal equipment is installed.

In July, the Lake Geneva City Council approved a low bid of $124,805.50 by Pieper Electric Co. Inc., Milwaukee, to install the new traffic lights.

Work on the new signals began Oct. 22. The work is expected to take several weeks, according to the city's website.

Work is being done in stages, and will involve sidewalk removal, signal removal, concrete replacement, signal wiring, installation of new equipment and then start-up of new signals, the website reports.

Under contract, all work on the traffic signals is expected to be completed by Nov. 28.

Public Works Director Dan Winkler has said that the proposed new traffic signals would include turn arrows for traffic going north and south on Center Street.

According to bid documents, the work also includes a safety "button" that changes lights to green immediately when approached by a fire truck, police car or ambulance responding to an emergency.

The proposed improvements were the result of a traffic study done last year by Crispell-Snyder.

A Crispell-Snyder report to the city indicated that the traffic signals at the intersections of Main and Center and Main and Broad streets were installed in 1981 and 1991.

Traffic light control technology has significantly improved since then, the report said, and updating traffic signal operations might improve traffic flow.

Among the improvements is communication between the intersections, which can change timing of the traffic signals to improve traffic flow.

Anyone with questions or special needs should contact Seth Ricker, construction services manager for Crispell-Snyder (262) 348-5600 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Those who cannot reach Ricker should contact Winkler at (262) 248-2311.

I wish they would take out the street lights and go to round abouts.

I have to admit that with the stop lights out, I am actually getting through town faster. Go figure!! Who would think construction would lead to a faster commute? :)

Keep the Four Way Stop Signs

Where's the jam? Since the lights went down I never wait in town. Perhaps four way stop signs are a more efficient way to handle traffic? Of course when the tourists return, both on foot and in their poorly driven cars, lack of traffic lights would be a debacle. But for now cruising through Lake Geneva is most pleasant.

    Agree! Keep the stop signs!

It's simply amazing to see traffic flowing smoothly and effectively with the stop signs. What the powers that be don't realize is that they can install the most hi-tech lights on the market, but they don't stop the fib-iots from pulling into the intersection when the light turns yellow or stacking up the turn lanes trying to go left "on red". Keep the stop signs and have a few traffic cops in the summer. Cheaper and better, perhaps that's why our city government didn't think of it.....

    About Time

How many gallons of gas have been wasted when a vehicle gets stopped 4 times while trying to go east on Hwy. 50. It is about time the signals will be syncronized. I agree the stop signs are working better, perhaps now we can focus on the citizens who cross the double yellow lines to park in the library spaces when heading west.

Better idea folks! Lets make get rid of the parking spots and just keep going 55 right on through. We can put bridges for the local traffic, and people to cross main street. Were locals anyway, how many Lake Geneva, WI tee shirts, and over priced dips do we all need? I'm so smart it hurts, they should hire me to rebuild America.
