I was once told that refrigerated food items that make it to the register, even if unopened, can not be re-stocked and sold. I was told that because there is no way to tell if you shopped in the food section first and then walked around the rest of the store. Those items had to be disposed of, and I presume, that they were waiting to be inventoried so that they could calculate their waste costs.
I not accusing anyone here of restocking the items. I just found it disturbing that these items would just sit there. When I worked retail and we had items that were to be tossed we took them to the dumpster and as we tossed we recorded all information needed and got rid of it right away. If that is their policy of doing things fine. I was just saying.
