Food handling.

July 06, 2012 | 07:07 PM

I was at Wal-mart earlier and seen something that disturbed me.

When I worked retail each department had carts of returned

merchandise at the customer service desk to be returned to the

respected departments for whatever reason. Well today while

standing in line to get a money order I seen a cart loaded with

refrigerated items just sitting against the wall. There was milk,

juices and a few other things that need to go back to the

coolers and every employee just walked past it. I know it

probably wasn't their department but we are talking food items

and spoilage probability. I don't know how long it was sitting

there before I seen it. But with this extreme heat it is warmer in

the stores than usual. My question is this. Why wasn't this

merchandise taken back to the department promptly? It takes

very little time in this heat for things to spoil. Has anyone else

seen something like this at stores?

I was once told that refrigerated food items that make it to the register, even if unopened, can not be re-stocked and sold. I was told that because there is no way to tell if you shopped in the food section first and then walked around the rest of the store. Those items had to be disposed of, and I presume, that they were waiting to be inventoried so that they could calculate their waste costs.

I not accusing anyone here of restocking the items. I just found it disturbing that these items would just sit there. When I worked retail and we had items that were to be tossed we took them to the dumpster and as we tossed we recorded all information needed and got rid of it right away. If that is their policy of doing things fine. I was just saying.
