The October 25th hard copy edition of The Regional News provided both leaders of the Walworth County Republican and Democratic parties the opportunity to provide an endorsement of their candidates.
Kim Travis, the head of the Walworth County Republican Party, provided the standard party platform in favor of Governor Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan, with a personal concern about the $16 trillion in debt that her children and future grandchildren will inherit. Well, based on Governor Romney's lack of specifics for reducing government spending and the voting record of Congressman Paul Ryan, I see nothing that will prevent our national debt from continuing to spiral out of control.
While Governor Romney does not have a voting record in Congress, Paul Ryan does. If his record is an indication as to how a Romney White House will deal with government spending, big government will continue to grow.
Here are some highlights of Congressman Ryan's legislative accomplishments:
*Support for the No Child left Behind Act which added more federal spending and more burdensome regulations for local education.
*The Medicare Prescription Drug and Modernization Act, the largest expansion of entitlement spending since the administration of President Lyndon Johnson, which some analysts estimate has added $7 trillion in unfunded entitlement obligations.
*The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 which provided a $700 billion bailout for the financial sector and allowed executives who mismanaged their businesses to keep their six and seven figures salaries and year-end bonuses, while millions of other taxpaying Americans with substantially lower incomes lost their jobs through no fault of their own.
*The Auto Industry Financing and Restructuring Act (the auto industry bail-out / take over). This not only provided a bail out for the auto companies, but for their unions, once again at the expense of millions of other taxpaying Americans with lower incomes.
*No less than 5 votes to raise the national debt ceiling, adding trillions of dollars to our national debt.
How is Congressman Ryan's record on these issues any different than that of Senator Harry Reid or Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi? Is this the man that Governor Romney, the Republican Party and Conservatives have offered as part of the team to reduce government spending and to reign in our $16 trillion national debt?
While I will not be voting for President Obama, I will no longer waste my vote on people who claim to be small government conservatives with voting records that indicate the exact opposite and whose campaign platforms offer no specifics to end runaway government spending.
For this election, I will be voting for Libertarian candidates Gary Johnson for President, Joe Kexel for US Senate and Keith Deschler to replace Paul Ryan as our 1st District US Congressman.
If my vote causes the Romney/Ryan ticket to lose, then maybe Republicans in the future will take government spending and deficit reduction more seriously, as our current national debt threatens to destroy our economy and imperils our national security.
