BREAKING: Ruzga wins thriller at state wrestling, other area scores

Madison -- Badger junior wrestler Ed Ruzga didn't disappoint in his first state match Thursday afternoon in Madison.

He needed two overtimes, but the powerful Ruzga (215) edged Holmen's Trevor Scholze in a Division 1 first-round tilt, 4-3, to improve to 20-5 on the season. Scholze dropped to 25-11.

However, in the quarterfinals, West Bend West's Steve Sizer (47-3) made short work of Ruzga, pinning him in 1:43. Badger's other three state qualifiers, John Leibforth (140), Dylan Peter (160) and Brad Nugent (285), all lost in their opening matches. Here are Badger's Thursday results along with Friday's schedule.

Boys basketball

Elkhorn 57, Badger 46

Elkhorn's Brock Pogensee scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter to help the visiting Elks topple Badger in Southern Lakes boys basketball action.

Badger (3-10 Southern Lakes, 3-18) led 10-9 after the first quarter, but Elkhorn gained a 17-15 advantage in the second quarter and never looked back.

Badger kept fighting in the fourth quarter. Thanks to a Brendan Gruenwald-Schmitz three-pointer with a couple minutes remaining in the game, Badger cut the lead to 51-44. Elkhorn then hit one of two from the foul line. On Badger's next possession, freshman Jacob Growel had a good look at a triple but was well off the mark, sealing the victory for the Elks.

The Elks drained nine free throws in the final frame and were 16-27 for the game.

Seniors Bobby Lamparek and Will Swanson, playing in their last home games, led the charge for Badger. Swanson drove hard to the hole all night, making several acrobatic layups. He led Badger with 13 points including two three-pointers. Lamparek, who fouled out late in the game, added 12 points with two triples.
