Man faces charges after allegedly leaving elderly mother in sun

August 11, 2011

ELKHORN — A 53-year-old Milwaukee man faces criminal charges after he allegedly left his elderly mother, who is wheelchair bound and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and high blood pressure, alone in the sun for about two hours.

John R. Salow, 3855 N. 77th St., has been charged with a misdemeanor count of negligently subjecting an individual at risk to abuse to harm. If convicted, Salow faces up to nine months imprisonment and $10,000 in fines.

When police told Salow his mother was being taken to the hospital to receive treatment, he allegedly responded that he really wanted to speak to another vendor before leaving a flea market, according to the criminal complaint.

According to the criminal complaint:

On June 26 police received a report of an elderly woman being left outside at the Walworth County Fair Grounds. When a police officer arrived at the fairgrounds, he observed that the woman was sitting in a wheelchair between a van and a chain-link fence.

The van door was open and a piece of tan paper was taped to the fence and to the van’s window. The elderly woman was sitting behind the paper and behind the door.

The officer spoke to the woman and learned her first name. When he asked her if she was thirsty, she nodded her head. The woman was warm to the touch, but not sweating. The officer gave the woman water until the rescue department arrived.

When police made contact with Salow, he said the woman was his mother and that he provided care for her because she suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and high-blood pressure.

He said before he left his mother he fed her and gave her water. He placed the tan paper above her to shield her from the sun. The officer reports the woman was sitting directly in the sun and at that time, according to www.weather.com, the high temperature was 77 degrees.

Salow told police he left his mother at about 1 p.m. and police arrived at about 3 p.m.

Fair Grounds security reported that the elderly woman was sitting alone in a flea market booth earlier in the day. Salow said he left his mother alone while he went to look at other booths.

After police told the man his mother was being taken to the hospital to receive medical attention, Salow said he really wanted to go speak to another vendor before he left the flea market.
