BREAKING - Smoke, burning smell coming from Minnesota

by Lisa Seiser

September 08, 2011

The haziness and smoky smell that is covering the Lake Geneva area today is the result of a forest fire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness near Ely, Minn.

According to the Star Tribune, the fire in northern Minnesota has grown to about seven square miles, engulfing 60,000 acres in the area. Winds have blown the massive amounts of smoke across Wisconsin and even as far as central Michigan.

The fire started in late August as a result of a lightning strike. A controlled burn last week helped reduce the chances of the fire spreading southward out of the Boundary Waters, according to the Star Tribune website.
