DELAVAN — Alyssa Skindingsrude, a junior at Whitewater High School, really wanted the new car.

One lucky student out of 12 would win that bright red Ford Focus parked in the middle of the conference room at Lake Lawn Lodge as part of the first annual Operation Click car giveaway in Walworth County on April 11.

The two-door 2007 from Kunes Country Auto Group, had been cleaned and polished. Students were to take a random key from a bowl. The key that started the engine won the car.

Sean McGrath, a Crystal Lake, Ill., police officer and president of Operation Click, noted that Alyssa seemed particularly excited.

She was the first to take a key. And then nearly melted into tears of joy as the engine caught.

Students who also qualified for the free car were:

Samantha Gosh, Whitewater; Kevin Lee and Cody DeVoy, Delavan-Darien; Amber Remport and Gavin Denecke, Badger; Carter Hehr and Kyle Rambatt, Big Foot; Olivia Brillenthin, Elkhorn Area; Mike Equi, East Troy; and Brandon Hoffman and Megan Wadsworth, Catholic Central. They each received a $50 gift certificate.

Operation Click started in Crystal Lake, Ill.’s three high schools in 1998.

This is the first year Wisconsin schools have participated.

The program goal is to develop safe driving habits in students through education and positive reinforcement .

The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office and Kunes Auto Group of Delavan cooperated to bring Operation Click to Walworth County.

Plans are already in the works for next year’s Operation Click.
