LA GRANGE TOWNSHIP - Walworth County sheriff's deputies shot an Elkhorn man dead early Thursday after he brutally beat his mother's boyfriend, stole a deputy vehicle and confronted officers with a shotgun he took from the squad car, according to a press release.

Jeremiah B. Krubert, 39, Elkhorn, was pronounced dead at the scene of a shooting that unfolded at about 2:45 a.m. Thursday in the Town of Sugar Creek.

According to the sheriff's office press release, deputies responded to N7248 Highway O in the Town of La Grange for a report of a home invasion in progress. Deputies encountered Krubert, who had broken into the home, which is owned by Michael J. Boyd, 54, and his girlfriend, Kathleen M. Krubert, 58, Jeremiah's mother.

Jeremiah Krubert allegedly beat Boyd with a metal pipe, which caused extensive damage to Boyd's skull and face.

Jeremiah Krubert attempted to leave the scene in Boyd's truck, but when a deputy found him, Krubert exited the vehicle and confronted the deputy with an "edged weapon." The deputy fired at Jeremiah Krubert several times, but Krubert somehow managed to steal the deputy's squad car and proceeded south on Highway O toward Millard, according to the press release.

A pursuit ensued, but Krubert crashed the squad car at the intersection of Millard Road and Pierce Road in the Town of Sugar Creek.

Jeremiah Krubert then got out of the squad with the vehicle's shotgun and was shot by three deputies when he refused commands to drop the weapon, the press release said.

Boyd was taken to Lakeland Medical Center, but due to severe skull and facial injuries, had to be taken to another medical facility in Milwaukee.

The four deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative duties, and the incident remains under investigation by the Walworth County sheriff's office and the state Department of Justice Criminal Investigation Division, the release said.

This is the fourth officer-involved shooting involving Walworth County sheriff’s deputies since July 2010.
