In my experience with law enforcement, tazer's are only used to subdue a violent person without a weapon, never used on someone who has (or claims to have) a weapon. Officers are trained that if someone displays a weapon, they use their gun to either scare the person into putting their weapon down or using it against the person.
There are two sides to every story, however from what I have read I would say that this officer did what he had to do. Police aren't the bad guys... they are trying to protect and serve...
