DELAVAN — The Shopko store in Delavan is among the latest casualties of the department store chain's bankruptcy.

The store at 1450 E. Geneva St. is among 174 stores that the Wisconsin-based retail chain is closing as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

The company's announcement indicates that the store will close by May 5.

"We hate to lose it," Delavan City Administrator Denise Pieroni said. "It's going to have an impact."

Located in the Pine Tree Plaza shopping center, the estimated 75,000-square-foot Shopko opened in 1995. It currently employs about 50 people and includes pharmacy and optical departments.

The shopping center also includes a Piggly Wiggly grocery store, Goodwill thrift store, Perkins restaurant and other retailers.

Pieroni said city officials have little recourse but to help attract a new tenant to take over the Shopko site.

The company's store closings announced Wednesday also include stores in Kenosha and Racine.
