On October 3, WisconsinEye interviewed Sen. Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) on why he is supporting legislation to legalize medical cannabis. Sen. Testin has worked on bipartisan medical cannabis legislation with Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) and Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-West Point) that would ensure safeguards against illegal operations and regulate medical cannabis. His support for medical cannabis comes from his personal experience with his grandfather Blair Testin using it to increase his quality of life during his fight against bone and lung cancer, which he lost in 2000. Blair was a lifelong public servant who inspired Sen. Testin to run for state government. It's unlikely that medical cannabis will be on the legislative agenda this fall, but Sen. Testin will continue to encourage the conversation. In response to a hypothetical question about helping a loved one break the law to get medical cannabis during their time of medical need, Sen. Testin said, "It's heart wrenching to see a loved one just basically wither away in front of you, and so, I would do what I have to do to provide for my family."
