WisEye Morning Minute: Limiting Civil Liability for Firearm Industry

  • Updated

Last week, the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety held a public hearing on Senate Bill 570 on limiting civil liability for firearm, firearm accessory, and ammunition manufacturers, distributors, importers, trade associations, sellers, and dealers. Bill author, Senator Julian Bradley (R-Franklin), explained that it would parallel current federal law known as the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act which he said was "under attack by the Biden Administration." Sen. Bradley argued the need to put state protections in place to remove the opportunity for "activist judges to restrict the second amendment by giving them a way to frivolously bankrupt firearm manufacturers." Christopher Lee of the National Shooting Sports Foundation testified in favor by highlighting the economic impact of the firearms industry in Wisconsin and that only "lawful commerce is protected in this bill." Following Lee was Ben Turk, organizer with Forum for Understanding Prisons, who opposed the bill and described it as "veto bait."
