The Badger girls swim team capped off its regular season Nov. 2 by competing in the Southern Lakes Conference championship meet. Badger finished in a close second behind winner Burlington, with the Badgers netting 441 points to Burlington’s 507.5, while third-place Elkhorn only scored 276.5.
In the first event of the meet, the Badger team of Addi Nelson, Ella Eck, Lilly Westlund and Mackenzie Farm placed fifth in the 200-yard medley relay.
The next event also saw Westlund place fifth, this time individually in the 200-yard freestyle. Chopper Cheshker took seventh in the event, and Zoe McNeil placed eighth.
In the 200-yard intermediate medley, Eck took seventh and Morgan Hallatt finished 10th.
The 50-yard freestyle saw a pair of Badgers near the top of the leader board, as Callie Ceshker finished second with a time of 25.02 and Kearyn Brennan placed fourth at 26.26. Maddie Hershelman also finished in the top half at 11th place with a 27.22.
Next up was the 100-yard butterfly, in which Lauren O’Brien claimed fourth place with a time of 1:04.56. Westlund took seventh in the event, and Nelson was close behind in eighth.
Callie Ceshker won the first event of the meet for Badger in the 100-yard freestyle, taking first with a time of 54.83 — nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Hania Dahms of Burlington at 57.55. McNeil also had a high finish in the event, taking third. Farm finished seventh, and Hershelman placed 10th to round out Badger’s top-half finishers in the 100 free.
In the longest event of the day, the 500-yard freestyle, Chopper Ceshker finished fifth with a time of 5:40, and Eck was just six seconds behind at 5:46 in eighth place.
One of the biggest highlights of the meet for the Badgers came in the 200-yard freestyle relay when the team of Brennan, McNeil, O’Brien and Callie Ceshker claimed first place with a time of 1:42 to beat out Whitewater’s second-place squad at 1:44.
In the 100-yard backstroke, a pair of Badgers finished just two seconds apart, as Brennan took sixth with a time of 1:04 and Nelson placed eighth at 1:06.
Next up was the 100-yard breaststroke, which saw O’Brien place in the top five with a time of 1:14 in fifth. Hallatt placed ninth in the event to claim a top-10 spot.
Badger’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Brennan, McNeil, O’Brien and Callie Ceshker finished off the meet with a third-place finish.
The Badgers’ next action will come at the sectional meet in Greenfield on Nov. 9, as the team will try to punch a ticket to the state meet.
